The Swift
code is a standard bank identification code (BIC) format and is a unique
identity code for a particular bank. These codes are used when transferring
money to a bank, especially international bank transfers. Banks also use codes
to exchange other messages with each other.
The Swift
code contains 8 or 11 characters. 8-digit codes refers to the main office. The
code has the following format;
AAAA BB CC
DDD
- First 4 letters - Bank code (only letters)
- Next 2 letters: ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code (characters only)
- Next 2 letters: location code (letters and numbers) (passive participants will have "1" in the second letter)
- Last
3 letters - Branch code, alphabet ('XXX' for the main office) (letters and numbers
